The Cause Of Acne

There are pores in our skin which contain oil glands; these oil glands are responsible for producing a substance commonly termed as sebum. Sebum oil keeps our skin lubricated and protected from dryness and roughness. However, it should be noted that on some occasions your oil glands work overtime or more than normal. This creates all that extra oil that can block up your pores, ambushing the dead skin cells and even attracting bacteria – which results in acne and sometimes even inflammation.

Experts suggest that oil overproduction usually takes place at times when you are having fluctuating hormone levels, mostly during your teenage years. For women it is more common during menstruation. So what types of acne can occur during these time periods?

Different Types Of Acne

Mild Acne

Small minor pimples, appearing occasionally in small numbers. With this type you will even have blackheads and whiteheads appear. But the good news is that you won't have any inflammation. This type is experienced by a lot of teenagers, with the most common complaint being acne on the forehead and nose. However, whiteheads are usually found around the eyes and chin areas of the face.

The Cure: Mild acne can effectively be treated by over the counter acne treatment products that contain salicylic acid. It will usually go away pretty quickly because this is acne in its early stages. So it is pretty easy to get rid of.

Moderate Acne

You will see a lot of whiteheads and blackheads appearing. As well as more pustules and papules. You may even have slight inflammation. But unfortunately with this type of acne it will be more noticeable on the surface of your skin. You may be experiencing other parts of your body breaking out as well. Like your back, chest and shoulders (particularly in men). Ladies we will experience this type of breakout activity mostly on our cheeks, chin and jaw line. I know I get a lot of breakouts on my chin a lot of times, especially around that time of the month. Some of you ladies may notice the same thing. Because that is when our hormones are the craziest.

The Cure: You will need the power of a benzoyl peroxide cream or lotion in addition to the use of salicylic acid. The benzoyl peroxide will kill off the bacterial cause of acne.

SEVERE Acne

With severe acne comes a flood of inflammation. You may have nodules (cystic acne) present. You will see a lot of pustules and papules and your skin will be very obviously red. You will have breakouts on other parts of your body as well because of the spreading infection.

The Cure: At this point you MUST see a doctor to be treated. PLEASE do not start poking, picking and popping stuff because with this type of acne you have a HIGH probability of scarring. Your doctor will more than likely prescribe topical prescription medications and/or potent systemic medications (for example: antibiotics). Your doctor will construct a treatment regimen just for you.

So there you have it all the different types of acne. All the information you need to control acne and not let it control you.
